Calgary and Vicinity

Calgary sits on the high plains Grasslands just east of the Rocky Mountains. It has a long tradition of western hospitality that blends nicely with its newer role as a chic, cosmopolitan city. Being the largest metropolitan area between Toronto and Vancouver, it is a vibrant, multicultural city with top-notch museums, dining, and arts. Genuine cowboys mix with urban sophisticates here.
Downtown Calgary is comprised of several districts, each with its own distinct personality. Visit the Cultural District to find the EPCOR Centre for the Performing Arts and the Glen Bow Museum. The Entertainment District is home to the Stephen Avenue pedestrian mall, with chic shops and restaurants in historic buildings. This is the spot for shopping or taking in a movie.
Calgary loves to put on festivals. Annual events range from the Chinatown Street Festival to the Calgary Fringe Festival, and everything in between. Music, food, theatre, film, and a myriad of cultures are all celebrated in Calgary. This is a city that likes to have fun.
The Calgary Stampede is world-famous. Held every July, this large rodeo and agricultural fair bills itself as the "Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth." The first Stampede took place in 1912, and it has been growing exponentially ever since.
If you can pull yourself away from all the fantastic attractions of Calgary proper, you'll find much to do in the surrounding area. Banff National Park is about an hour and a half to the west. Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump, one of the oldest and best preserved such sites in the world, is two hours south of Calgary. Drive east to Drumheller and visit the Royal Tyrell museum, an incredible paleontology site for dinosaurs.
There is no shortage of natural beauty, culture, or historically significant sites in and around Calgary. Select a comfortable Calgary Bed and Breakfast inn, and settle in for a nice, long stay.
